How to read a zodiac pairing

Sign compatibility is the oldest and most popular question in astrology — and the easiest one to misread. This guide explains what can and cannot be read from two sun signs, so you also know where the real chart work begins.

Why a sun sign settles nothing

The sun sign follows from the month you were born in, so roughly one twelfth of the population shares it with you. Being a Taurus says a fair amount about someone's baseline nature and nothing about a specific relationship. A pairing description is therefore not a verdict but a typology: it shows where two natures like these tend to meet easily, and where to pay attention.

What element and modality show

The four elements (fire, earth, air, water) describe how someone experiences emotion; the three modalities (cardinal, fixed, mutable) describe how they relate to change. Traditionally, matching elements understand each other easily, fixed-fixed pairs are stubborn, and cardinal-cardinal combinations compete for the wheel. Most of the per-page score is built from those two axes.

Why the man-woman questions live on one page

Because it is the same pairing. There is a genuine difference in how an Aries man with a Scorpio woman plays out versus the reverse — which is why both appear as separate questions — but the two signs behind it are identical. Two separate pages would repeat the same content, so we keep them together.

Where the real reading starts

Where time and place enter the picture: the ascendant, the Moon and Venus matter at least as much to relationship dynamics as the sun sign does. Two couples with the same sign pairing work completely differently if one has their Moons side by side and the other has them opposed. That is what the calculator works out from birth data.

Frequently asked questions about sign compatibility

The questions people search for most about zodiac compatibility.

Is there a zodiac pairing that simply does not work?

No. Even traditional astrology recognises no combination as ruled out — only ones that ask for more conscious work. The pairings considered difficult (opposite signs, or signs at a square) are frequently the most durable, precisely because neither party can comfortably sit out the tension. What decides a relationship is the attitude, not the birth month.

How accurate is the compatibility score?

The score is a deterministic calculation: the same two signs always produce the same number, built from openly stated factors — the relationship between elements and modalities, the link between the two ruling planets, and the distance between the signs. It is a usable starting point, but it does not measure two actual people: that needs birth time and place.

Does the order of the signs matter?

No. The same pairing gives the same result in either order, which is why each pair has exactly one page. Starting from your own sign lands you in the same place as starting from your partner's.

What is the difference between sign compatibility and synastry?

Sign compatibility compares two sun signs — that is what these pages do. Synastry compares the two FULL birth charts: the positions of the Moon, Venus, Mars and the ascendant relative to each other, and which of your houses their planets land in. That is a personal reading and it requires birth times.

Do two people with the same sign get along?

A same-sign pairing is the easiest and the hardest at once: nothing needs translating because they speak one language, but they also bring identical blind spots. Two Pisces rarely misunderstand each other about feelings, though nobody is driving the practical decisions either. That is why every same-sign pair gets its own page too.

Calculate your exact compatibility

The sun sign is only the opening. Add birth date, time and place — the ascendant then counts too, and the score is about the two of you.
